The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Fifth Sunday in Lent
Kirkin’ o’ the Tartans
Sunday, March 29, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 51:1-12 (Pew Bible page 452); Jeremiah 31:31-34 (page 642) God promises a new covenant with Israel that will be written upon the people’s hearts. Hebrews 5:5-10 (page 973) Christ has been made our high priest. John 12:20-33 (page 875) While Jesus is speaking about his death, a voice from heaven is heard.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Lord Jesus, during these days of Lent, we walk behind you – far behind you – as you walk toward the cross. Teach us the discipline, the faith, the commitment to walk faithfully down this narrow way. Help us to see our times of suffering and difficulty as opportunities for us to share in your redemptive suffering for the sake of our world. Give us not a way around the pain, but a way through it, for your sake and the sake of the gospel. Amen.

THE GATHERING

BELL PEAL
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME
PRELUDE “Amazing Grace” Martin

THE LENTEN CANDLE CEREMONY
INTROIT (Hymn #85) “What Wondrous Love Is This” Wondrous Love
CHOIR: What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul,
what wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss
to bear the heavy cross for my soul, for my soul,
to bear the heavy cross for my soul!
LITANY
LEADER: It is time for our sins to be washed away
PEOPLE: that we may be as clean as the fresh-driven snow.
LEADER: May God make our hearts pure
PEOPLE: and our spirits right with him.

THE FIFTH LENTEN CANDLE IS EXTINGUISHED
LEADER: As we extinguish the fifth Lenten candle, we are reminded that Christ is the great high priest chosen by God. Through his suffering he learned to obey God and his eternal salvation is for us as well if we obey. (the candle is extinguished)

LEADER: Let us pray. O God, help us to realize that the only true good we can do in this world is by obeying you. By being obedient to the perfect high priest, Jesus Christ, we know that you promise us eternal salvation. We give you praise.
ALL: Amen.
*RESPONSE (Hymn #85) “What Wondrous Love Is This” Wondrous Love
ALL: To God and to the Lamb, I will sing, I will sing.
to God and to the Lamb, I will sing!
To God and to the Lamb, who is the great I Am,
while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
while millions join the theme, I will sing!
*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: I am doing a new thing, says our God.
PEOPLE: We will answer God with new hearts.
LEADER: Seek me, and desire truth and mercy, calls our God.
PEOPLE: With our whole lives, we will hear God’s voice.
LEADER: If a grain of wheat dies, it grows into new life, promises Jesus.
PEOPLE: We will seek to let go, and to grow deeper into faith.
LEADER: If you wish to follow me, become servants, Jesus tells us.
PEOPLE: We will live a life of service, following him.
ALL: Let us worship God!

*PROCESSION OF PIPES AND DRUMS AND FAMILY TARTANS Bagpipers

“Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: The proof of God’s amazing love for us is this:
while we were sinners, Christ died for us.
PEOPLE: Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence.
LEADER: Let us confess our sins against God and neighbor.
ALL: The closer we draw to Jerusalem and to his final confrontation with earthly powers, the less we like what we see in Jesus, O God. He’s saying dangerous things about death and life, and we certainly don’t want to be around when the reckoning with the authorities comes – as it surely must, not only in Jesus’ day, but also in our own. Forgive us, we pray, for our insistence upon following the rosy cross of our fantasies, rather than the executioner’s cross of your Son. Help us to find new courage and strength, new life amid death, and to take up whatever our cross may be; under the mercy of him who died that we might live, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

(-2-)

RESPONSE (Hymnal #573) “Lord, Have Mercy” Kyrie
CHOIR: Lord, have mercy. ALL: Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy. Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Although he was as we are, Jesus “learned obedience through what he suffered: and being made perfect he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him.”
PEOPLE: Today, as we come before God confessing our sins, Jesus the high priest is our source of forgiveness.
LEADER: Let us trust in the word of Christ and be forgiven.

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Scot’s Confession of 1560
We confess and acknowledge one God alone, to whom alone we must cleave, whom alone we must serve, whom only we must worship, and in whom alone we put our trust. Who is eternal, infinite, immeasurable, incomprehensible, omnipotent, invisible: one in substance and yet distinct in three persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost. By whom we confess and believe all things in heaven and earth, visible and invisible, to have been created, to be retained in their being, and to be ruled and guided by his inscrutable providence for such end as his eternal wisdom, goodness, and justice have appointed, and to the manifestation of his own glory. Amen.

OFFERING OF OUR TITHES AND GIFTS

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

BRINGING FORTH OF THE TARTANS
BLESSING OF THE TARTANS and CLANS OF THE KIRK

THE SENDING

*HYMN #371 “Lift High the Cross” Crucifer
*BENEDICTION
*RESPONSE (Hymn #101) “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross” Hamburg
ALL: When I survey the wondrous cross on which the Prince of Glory died,
my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.
Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were a present far too small;
love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.
*CHARGE
*POSTLUDE “Scotland the Brave” Bagpipers

*The congregation stands. If standing is difficult for you, please feel free to remain seated.

NEXT SUNDAY, April 5, 2009, will be Passion/Palm Sunday and the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. The scripture readings will be: Psalm 31:9-16 (Pew Bible pages 439-440); Isaiah 50:4-9 (page 594)
Because of the Lord’s help, the Suffering Servant is not put to shame by adversaries. Mark 14:1-15:47 (pages 826-829) Jesus prepares for his death with his disciples. He is crucified and buried.
PRAYER FOR PEACE IN SUDAN The International Criminal Court has named the President of Sudan a criminal, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest. He has demanded that all charity functions in the Sudan be ceased by the end of March. Three doctors of Medecins sans Frontieres have even been kidnapped. People who were desperate in the face of a vicious President and a violent army are even more desperate. The United Nations is insufficiently armed to control the destruction of villages and to protect the people of the Sudan. Dear Father in Heaven, please help the people of the Sudan rid themselves of the tyrant who controls and destroys their lives. Protect the aid workers. Give strength and directions to neighboring African states to lend a serious helping hand to all these displaced people. And, O God, grant all these people peace. Amen.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME and are interested in joining First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, please indicate your desire to Pastor ByRoade so we can arrange a gathering of our Session.

We Welcome You
If after Kirk ye bide a wee,
There’s some would like to speak to ye,
If after Kirk ye rise and flee
We’ all seem cauld and still to ye.
The one that’s in the seat with ye
Is stranger here than ye, maybe.
All here have got their fears and cares,
Add ye your soul unto our prayers,
Be ye our angel unawares.
