PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 104:24-35 (Pew Bible pages 483-484); Acts 2:1-21 (page 885) The Spirit falls on the disciples, and they speak in many tongues. Romans 8:22-27 (page 919) The Spirit helps us as we groan with all creation awaiting redemption. John 15:26-27; 16:4-15 (pages 878-879) Jesus speaks of the coming of the Spirit as an advocate to the church.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: O God of fire, burn your way into our hearts and kindle within us your love. Then, drive us forth from our congregations into the streets to speak that universal language. Through the Holy Spirit you have called us to join in your heavenly work. Be with us as we continue the missionary work of your first congregation, reaching all peoples with the good news of Jesus Christ. Amen.

LEADER: The proof of God’s amazing love for us is this:

ALL: Holy Spirit, Lord, Giver of Life, we remember and celebrate your power this day. But not too much, for we are afraid of your power. You blow where you choose. We cannot control you. NEXT SUNDAY, June 7, 2009 will be Trinity Sunday and the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. The scripture readings for the day will be: Psalm 29 (Pew Bible page 438); Isaiah 6:1-8 (page 553) Isaiah receives his call through an amazing heavenly vision. Romans 8:12-17 (page 919) Through the Spirit, we are adopted as children of God and made joint heirs with Christ. John 3:1-17 (pages 863-864) Jesus teaches Nicodemus about the kingdom of God and gift of new life.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – CREDIT CARD DEBT: The average American family owes $7,500 in credit card debt. This debt, on top of mortgages and car payments, forces many families to struggle everyday to reduce other essential costs of living that debt can be paid. The struggle is putting our community and our entire nation at risk. Recent changes in the credit card laws will restrict penalties and rate increases by the credit card companies, but the new rules bring to light the scale of the credit problem and the impact such ongoing debt has on our citizenry. A large part of the problem is the existence of the credit cards themselves and the heavy temptation to use them in the first place. The daily temptation of available credit – when a debit would be so much healthier – tears at the fabric of our society and damages the families among us. Father in Heaven, slow our hands as we reach for our debit and credit cards. Help us put the credit card aside and forego the purchase if we can’t afford it now. Give us strength to get out of debt and free ourselves of the tiny temptations that result in great burdens in our lives. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

PENTECOST OFFERING Today we receive the Pentecost Offering. The Pentecost Offering goes to General Assembly ministries with youth and young adults (50%) and to national child advocacy programs (10%). Forty percent (40%) is retained locally. This year, our local share will be split between the First Friends Preschool for tuition support where parents are out of work, and the RCS Haven which ministers to women and children in abusive situations. Thank you for giving generously to the Pentecost Offering.

THE VIDEO CLUB will meet on Wednesday, June 3^rd at 6:00 p.m. at Kabob’s (1425 Main St., Dunedin – next to Subway and Michael Anthony’s Hair Salon). We will return to church at approximately 7:00 and watch the conclusion of Last Chance Harvey.

CHURCH PICNIC! Saturday, June 20^th at 11:00 a.m. You are invited to join us at John Chestnut Park at Shelter Number 7 for an all church picnic. Hotdogs and hamburgers will be served. Bring a dish and all your friends for this exciting event! This is a great opportunity to invite friends and family to get to know us. We hope to see you there!
