The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
Trinity Sunday and the Sacrament of the Lords Supper
Sunday, June 7, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 29 (Pew Bible page 438); Isaiah 6:1-8 (page 553) Isaiah receives his call through an amazing heavenly vision. Romans 8:12-17 (page 919) Through the Spirit, we are adopted as children of God and made joint heirs with Christ. John 3:1-17 (pages 863-864) Jesus teaches Nicodemus about the kingdom of God and gift of new life.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Creator God, the earth is yours and all who dwell therein; the moon and stars reflect your radiance. You are the potter who fashions works of beauty from the mud, the painter who hangs the rainbow in the sky as the sign of your covenant. We join with those through the ages who have lauded your works of creation and redemption, evermore praising you and saying, How majestic is your name in all the earth! Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME
PRELUDE Variations on NICAEA Sobaje
INTROIT (Hymn #507) I Come with Joy Dove of Peace
CHOIR: I come with Christians far and near to find as all are fed,
the new community of love in Christs communion bread,
in Christs communion bread.
*ALL: As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends,
the love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends,
and strangers now are friends.
*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: Waiting for the touch of the wind,
PEOPLE: we find the Spirit.
LEADER: Blowing in our lives, disturbing and rearranging,
PEOPLE: the Spirit finds us.
LEADER: Awed by the colors of sunrise and sunset,
PEOPLE: we meet the Creator.
LEADER: Seeing our fellow creatures with wings, scales and fur,
PEOPLE: the Creator meets us.
LEADER: In the breaking of bread and the pouring of water,
PEOPLE: we meet the Redeemer.
LEADER: In our work to seek the lost and heal the hurt,
PEOPLE: the Redeemer meets us.
ALL: As one people, let us worship God, Creator, Redeemer and Spirit!
*HYMN #138 Holy, Holy, Holy! Lord God Almighty! Nicaea
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves
for all of us fall short of the glory of God.
PEOPLE: But if we confess our sins, God, who is gracious and just,
will forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all of them.
LEADER: Let us, then, in humility and faith,
confess our sins before God and one another.
ALL: Triune God, you dance among us in joy, inviting us into the mystery that you are. Yet we want understanding; we want answers. Forgive our thick-headedness. Encircle us in your oneness, and teach us to trust you with abandon, as we invite others to join the dance. Amen.
RESPONSE (Hymn #309) Of the Fathers Love Begotten Divinum Mysterium
CHOIR: Of the Fathers love begotten, ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega, He the source of ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see,
Evermore and evermore!
ALL: Christ, to Thee with God the Father, and, O Holy Ghost to Thee,
Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving and unwearied praises be;
Honor, glory, and dominion, and eternal victory,
Evermore and evermore!
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Our God is faithful and just. Our God keeps His promises.
PEOPLE: It was Jesus Christ, Himself, who bore our sins upon the cross that we might be dead to sin and alive to all that is good.
LEADER: Friends, hear and believe the good news of the Gospel.
ALL: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God.
*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

RESPONSE (Hymn #521) You Satisfy the Hungry Heart Finest Wheat
CHOIR: (REFRAIN) You satisfy the hungry heart with gifts of finest wheat;

The mystery of Your presence Lord, No mortal tongue can tell.
Whom all the world cannot contain, Comes in our hearts to dwell.
ALL: (REFRAIN)
INVITATION TO THE TABLE
LEADER: Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God! Men and women will come from east and west, and from north and south, and sit at table in the Kingdom of God. According to Luke, when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples, he took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. This is the Lords table. Our Savior invites all who love him to share the feast which he has prepared. (-3-)
GREAT PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING
LEADER: The Lord be with you.
PEOPLE: And also with you.
LEADER: Lift up your hearts.
PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord.
LEADER: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
PEOPLE: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
LEADER: It is right and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. In the beginning your Spirit moved over the face of the waters. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. Your Spirit came upon prophets and teachers, anointing them to speak your Word. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
SANCTUS (Hymnal #581) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
LEADER: Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. At his baptism in the Jordan your Spirit descended upon him and declared him your beloved Son. With your Spirit upon him he turned away the temptation of sin. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection You gave birth to your church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. When the Lord Jesus ascended, he promised to be with us always, baptizing us with the Holy Spirit and with fire, as on the Day of Pentecost. On the night in which he gave himself up for us he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me. When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: Drink from it, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me. (-4-)
On the day you raised him from the dead he was recognized by his disciples in the breaking of the bread, and in the power of your Holy Spirit your church has continued in the breaking of bread and the sharing of the cup. And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christs offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION (Hymnal #582) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Dying, You destroyed our death; Rising You restored our life.
Lord, Jesus, come in glory!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION CONTINUES
LEADER: Pour out your Holy Spirit on us, gathered here, and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit, make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy church, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

We give thanks for all the gifts, great and small, which have been poured out upon your children. Accept us with our gifts to be living praise and witness to your love throughout all the earth; through Jesus Christ who lives with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever. Amen.

Mark 4:26-34 (pages 815-816) Jesus tells a parable about a harvest growing from scattered seeds.
PRAYER FOR PEACE TAMIL HINDUS: The Tamil Tigers are Hindus and for 26 years they have been fighting a brutal insurgency in Sri Lanka for control of their villages. They have had heavy support from Hindus in southern India, but they finally lost to the government of Sri Lanka. Their fate is not known. They have used terrible means including suicide bombings to make their political demands known, so the Sri Lankan government and the rest of the world is not very sympathetic to their cause. However, there is and always was a cause, a reason for fighting to breathe in a society that doesnt acknowledge you as a person, that refuses to permit you to worship as you please, that ignores you in the political process. The Tamil need our prayers. The government of Sri Lanka needs our prayers so that the Tamil can find a way to participate without bloodshed in the governance of their country. Father in Heaven, put your loving hands on the hearts of the Buddhists and the Hindus in Sri Lanka and southern India. Help them hear each other and to respect the fears and hopes of each side. Bring them peace after this long season of war. Amen.
