The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time
June 21, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: The scripture readings will be: Psalm 9:9-12 (Pew Bible page 428); 1 Samuel 17:(1, 4-11, 19-23) 32-49 (pages 227-228) David defeats Goliath, the champion of the Philistines. 2 Corinthians 6:1-13 (page 940) Paul recounts many calamities that he has suffered for the gospel. Mark 4:35-41 (page 816) Jesus rebukes the wind, the waves, and the disciples.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: O God, you do not see as we see. You do not look upon us as we look upon others. Our eyes are seduced by outward appearance, but yours cut straight to the heart. Search us, O God. Lay bare our ardent longing for you, and grant our heart’s desire. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME

PRELUDE “Mediation” Wagner

*INTROIT (Hymn #404) “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” Precious Lord
ALL: Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help me stand;
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.

*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: Today is the day of salvation!
PEOPLE: God gives abundantly to the needy and the poor.
LEADER: Today is the day of salvation!
PEOPLE: God gives shelter to the weary, and peace to the frightened.
LEADER: Today is the day of salvation!
PEOPLE: God gives forgiveness to all who need the blessing of grace.
LEADER: Today is the day of salvation!
PEOPLE: God gives strength to all who serve and serenity to all who seek it.
ALL: Let us worship God!

*HYMN (Borrowed Light) “The Sails Were Spilling Wind” Darwell’s 148th
The sails were spilling wind, the boat was taking waves.
The mast began to bend then called the Lord who saves:
“Be still, be still, and rage no more! Let peace descend on sea and shore.”

The sea became as glass, reflecting heaven’s light.
The storm completely passed when Jesus said that night:
“Be still, be still, and rage no more! Let peace descend on sea and shore.”

Then heading toward the land, they marveled on the way
that Jesus could command and make the sea obey:
“Be still, be still, and rage no more! Let peace descend on sea and shore.”

The storm returns again. In every heart it raves
until we hear again the Lord who told the waves:
“Be still, be still, and rage no more! Let peace descend on sea and shore.”

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: Since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God,
PEOPLE: let us with confidence draw near the throne of grace,
that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
LEADER: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
ALL: God of David, we hear booming voices deriding our faith. We want to be brave for you, but we are not. We want to trust in the gifts you have given us, but we do not. We back away, mumbling excuses. Have mercy on us, O God. Give us courage to step forward as your people, trusting in your power, working through us, and strengthen our voices to proclaim your praise. Amen.

RESPONSE (Hymn #389) “O Jesus, I Have Promised” Nyland
ALL: O Jesus, I have promised to serve Thee to the end;
be Thou forever near me, my Master and my friend;
I shall not fear the battle if Thou art by my side,
nor wander from the pathway if Thou wilt be my guide.
O let me hear Thee speaking in accents clear and still,
above the storms of passion, the murmurs of self-will;
O speak to reassure me, to hasten or control;
O speak, and make me listen, Thou guardian of my soul.

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH Iona Community Worship Book
We believe in God whose love is the source of all life and the desire of our lives,
whose love was given a human face in Jesus of Nazareth,
whose love was crucified by the evil that waits to enslave us all,
and whose love, defeating even death, is our glorious promise of freedom.
Therefore, though we are sometimes fearful and full of doubt, in God we trust.
And, in the name of Jesus Christ, we commit ourselves,
in the service of others, to seek justice and to live in peace,
to care for the earth and share the commonwealth of God’s goodness,
to live in the freedom of forgiveness, so to be the church,
for the glory of God. Amen.

*RESPONSE (Hymn #422) “God, Whose Giving Knows No Ending” Beach Spring
ALL: God, whose giving knows no ending, from your rich and endless store,
nature’s wonder, Jesus’ wisdom, costly cross, grave’s shattered door:
gifted by You, we turn to You, offering up ourselves in praise;
thankful song shall rise forever, gracious donor of our days.
Treasure too You have entrusted, gain through powers Your grace conferred;
ours to use for home and kindred, and to spread the gospel Word.
Open wide our hands, in sharing, as we heed Christ’s ageless call,
healing, teaching, and reclaiming, serving You by loving all.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – IRAN The Iranian people have re-elected their president Mr. Ahmadinejad, and there is much distress in the land. The challenger, Mr. Moussavi, believes that he won and he wants all the other countries in the world to hold back their acknowledgement of the victory claimed by Mr. Ahmadinejad. He has appealed to the Supreme Ruling Cleric in Iran to annul the election. An investigation has been promised, but the people are not satisfied. This is a terrible situation. Iran is one of the oldest civilizations in the world, and a civil war in Iran would be tragic. There is much anger in the streets and people are violently demonstrating against their “stolen” election. We need to pray for the people of Iran to rise above the fear and find a way to have future elections that they can trust. Dear Father in heaven, please place your peace-loving arms around the people of Iran. Help them deal with their current leaders fairly and to resolve their disputes without more bloodshed. Bless the great nation of Iran and give their people a chance at peace. Amen.
