And sing to our God, and sing to our God. *OPENING SENTENCES LEADER: Who are we who gather this summer Sunday? PEOPLE: We are those besieged by the messages and values of the world. LEADER: Why do we come here? PEOPLE: We come to worship God, the source of life, to hear again the words of Jesus, to discern his way, and to find the grace to walk it. LEADER: How are we enabled? PEOPLE: We attend to Christ's teaching, contemplate the symbols of the gospel story, and pray to be strengthened by the Holy Spirit for faithful life and witness in Christ's name. ALL: Let us worship God! *HYMN #488 "The God of Abraham Praise" Leoni PRAYER OF CONFESSION LEADER: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. PEOPLE: But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. LEADER: In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to Almighty God. ALL: God of grace and God of glory, we want glory for ourselves. We want to be strong and independent. We daydream about doing great things. We forget that we depend on you for everything: for the very air we breathe; for your strength that holds us together; for life in the community you create in Christ; for the forgiveness that makes new life possible. In your mercy, bind us together and send us out to proclaim the good news of your kingdom. Amen. RESPONSE (Hymn #527) "Near to the Heart of God" McAfee CHOIR: There is a place of quiet rest, near to the heart of God, a place where sin cannot molest, near to the heart of God. O Jesus, blest redeemer, sent from the heart of God, hold us, who wait before Thee, near to the heart of God. ALL: There is a place of full release, near to the heart of God, a place where all is joy and peace, near to the heart of God. O Jesus, blest redeemer, sent from the heart of God, hold us, who wait before Thee, near to the heart of God. ASSURANCE OF PARDON LEADER: We have received God's word of assurance through the prophet Isaiah who declared that when we confess our sins, God will abundantly pardon. LEADER: Eternal God, holy and mighty, it is truly right and our greatest joy to give you thanks and praise, and to worship you in every place where your glory abides. You commanded light to shine out of darkness, divided the sea and dry land, created the vast universe and called it good. You made us in your image to live with one another in love. You gave us the breath of life and freedom to choose your way. You promised yourself in covenant with Abraham and Sarah, told us your purpose in commandments through Moses, and called for justice in the cry of the prophets. Through long generations you have been faithful and kind to all your children. Therefore, we praise you, joining our voices with the heavenly choirs and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name: SANCTUS (Hymnal #581) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Revealing your love, Jesus taught those who would hear him, healed those who believed in him, received all who sought him and lifted the burden of their sin. We glorify you for your great power and love at work in Christ. Mark 6:14-21 (pages 817-818) Herod has John the Baptist beheaded in an act of oppression. PRAYER FOR PEACE - INDEPENDENCE Yesterday was July 4th, Independence Day. What a unique and simple concept. It is so strange that other countries struggle to allow their citizens to march, to assemble, to protest, and to question their governments. It is so common to us here in the United States. However, our democracy is only as good as we are, it is only as solid as our votes at the polls, our free statements criticizing our leadership where needed, and our open handling of justice among ourselves. It is worth fighting for. We are very lucky that our military is strong and that our friends and neighbors continue to be willing to join the military to possibly defend the freedoms we cherish. Dear God, please help us understand the precious gift of our public freedoms. Bless our leaders and our military and all the retired or former veterans who have served and suffered for us. Give us the good sense to cherish our freedoms, to speak up when facing outrage, and to step up when facing the threats that surround us. Help us to continue to stand for our rights and the rights of others throughout our world. Amen.
