The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 12, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 24 (Pew Bible page 436); 2 Samuel 6:1-5, 12-19 (pages 244-245) David dances with joy at the return of the Ark of the Covenant. Ephesians 1:3-14 (page 949) In Christ we have been blessed with the gifts of adoption, redemption, and wisdom. Mark 6:14-21 (pages 817-818) Herod has John the Baptist beheaded in an act of oppression.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Everlasting God, in whom we live and move and have our being: You have made us for yourself, so that our hearts are restless until they rest in you. Give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness keep up from doing it; that in your light we may see light clearly, and in your service find perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE GATHERING

BELL PEAL

ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME

PRELUDE “A Joyous Acclamation” Lani Smith

INTROIT (Sing the Faith #2236) “Gather Us In” Gather Us In
CHOIR: Here in this place new light is streaming,
now is the darkness vanished away,
see in this space our fears and our dreamings,
brought here to you in the light of this day.
Gather us in – the lost and forsaken, gather us in – the blind and the lame;
call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name.
*ALL: We are the young – our lives are a myst’ry,
we are the old – who yearn for your face,
we have been sung through out all of hist’ry,
called to be light to the whole human race.
Gather us in – the rich and the haughty, gather us in – the proud and the strong;
give us a heart so meek and so lowly, give us the courage to enter the song.

*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: Who is invited to worship God?
EAST SIDE: All who seek the blessings of the spirit.
WEST SIDE: All who have gifts to offer for God’s service.
EAST SIDE: All who are thankful for our redemption.
WEST SIDE: All who live in hope of God’s reign on earth.
LEADER: Who is invited to worship God?
ALL: Children of God, let us worship!

*HYMN #220 “All People That on Earth Do Dwell” Old Hundredth

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
O Lord our God, you are the King of glory! Should we not throw open the doors and welcome you? Yet we stand in this holy place with unclean hands and impure hearts. We have lifted up our souls to the false idols of our culture: to greed and power, to fame and wealth. We have been deceitful in our words and deeds. Yet, with all the world, we are yours. Forgive us, O God. Fling open the doors of our hearts and come in! You are the King of Glory, and we will sing your praises! Amen.

RESPONSE (Hymn #298) “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy” In Babilone
ALL: There’s a wideness in God’s mercy, like the wideness of the sea;
There’s a kindness in God’s justice, which is more than liberty.
There is no place where earth’s sorrows are more felt than up in heaven;
There is no place where earth’s failings have such kindly judgment given.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Through Jesus’ teaching and cross
we learn the costly reality of God’s forgiveness.
PEOPLE: For in spite of the worst humanity could do,
we are not separated but rather reconciled to God through Christ.
LEADER: This is a teaching and a truth to be received and lived,
by the power of the Holy Spirit.
ALL: Thanks be to God!

*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.”

CHILDREN’S SERMON Eric Houghton

(The children are invited to remain for worship)

NEXT SUNDAY, July 19, 2009 will be the Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time.

Ephesians 2:11-22 (page 950) Christ has brought unity and reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles. Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 (page 818) Jesus has compassion for those who follow him, and he heals the sick.
PRAYER FOR PEACE – HONDURAS In an effort to hold a referendum to modify his country’s constitution so that he could stay in office another term, President Manuel Zelaya was forcibly removed from his home at the end of June; and the military has placed another man in his chair. Many other countries have condemned the coup, withdrawing diplomats and freezing financial assets in an attempt to show support for constitutional governance. The Honduras military may think they are the protectors of the constitution, but running the president out of town in the middle of the night gives nobody comfort. The people and the Honduras military are facing each other with daily increased tension, and the situation is deteriorating. Father in Heaven, please help the people of Honduras to rule themselves in peace. Please bring calm and reason to the minds of both the military and civilian leaders, and guide their hands away from force and conflict while they sort through the options for re-establishing their democracy. Amen
