The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 19, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 89:20-37 (Pew Bible pages 475-476); 2 Samuel 7:1-14 (page 245) The Lord makes a covenant with David that his offspring will rule Israel. Ephesians 2:11-22 (page 950) Christ has brought unity and reconciliation between Jews and Gentiles. Mark 6:30-34, 53-56 (page 818) Jesus has compassion for those who follow him, and he heals the sick.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Help us, O Lord, in our life together, to demonstrate to a fractured and hurting world that Jesus really makes people who are able to live by their convictions, who are able to live as sisters and brothers in all that we do and say. To the glory of your name. Amen.

show us how to serve the neighbors we have from You.

*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: In Christ Jesus we who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.
PEOPLE: For he is our peace; he has made us into one and has broken down the dividing wall between us.
LEADER: He proclaimed peace to those who were far off and peace to those who were near.
PEOPLE: So we are no longer strangers and aliens, but are citizens with the saints and members of the household of God.
ALL: Let us worship God!

*HYMN #469 “Morning Has Broken” Bunessan
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel, says the Lord:
PEOPLE: I will put my law within them, and I will write it upon their hearts:
and I will be their God and they will be my people.
LEADER: I will forgive their evil deeds and I will remember their sins no more.
In penitence and faith, let us confess our sins to almighty God.
ALL: God our creator, your faithfulness is great. The seasons of the earth praise you in their turn. The sun, the moon, and the stars shout, “God is great!” But we fail you: we turn away from your presence. We change with the prevailing wind. Our compassion for others is fleeting. Faithful God, pardon our sin and give us your peace. Bless us with new mercies morning by morning, that we may share your steadfast love. Amen.

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD
*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Confession of 1967 (ILT)
The reconciling work of Jesus was the supreme crisis in the life of humankind. His cross and resurrection become personal cries and present hope for women and men when the gospel is proclaimed and believed. In this experience, the Spirit brings God’s forgiveness to all, moves people to respond in faith, repentance and obedience, and initiates the new life in Christ. The new life takes shape in a community in which people know that God loves and accepts them in spite of what they are. They therefore accept themselves and love others, knowing that no one has any ground on which to stand except God’s grace. Amen.

OFFERING OF OUR TITHES AND GIFTS
OFFERTORY “Partita on TALLIS’ CANON” Bristol, Jr.
*DOXOLOGY (Hymnal #591)

*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

THE SENDING

That in Your Spirit strong and true our lives may be our gift to You.

PRAYER FOR PEACE IN IRAQ US Military Forces have closed urban bases of operation in Iraq, leaving the policing of the country in the hands of the Iraqi Forces. However, the Iraq Government has not yet established ways to share power with its various political factions, nor ways to fairly split the revenues that will come from their huge supplies of petroleum; and suicide bombings continue shockingly unabated. The Iraqi Forces are thus hampered in their mission of establishing peace. There will be ongoing difficulties as the people of Iraq work out essential relationships for power-sharing and revenue distribution, as well as ongoing challenges to the Iraqi Police to maintain safety in the streets. Dear God, bless the people of Iraq. Help them find it in their hearts to honor the claims of all their citizens and to find balanced ways of responding to their many internal conflicts. Guide their rebuilding, community development, and their re-settlements. Help them find ways to protect those inevitably displaced in the end. Give them your grace and hope for the future. Amen.
