The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time
Youth Sunday
August 30, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.

PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 45:1-2, 6-9 (Pew Bible page 449); Song of Solomon 2:8-13 (page 544) A woman is filled with excitement and joy as her lover approaches. James 1:17-27 (pages 980-981) In response to God’s gifts, we are called to be doers of the Word. Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23 (pages 818-819) Jesus warns the crowd against being defiled from within the heart.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: O God, author and giver of all good things, plant in our hearts the love of your name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

THE GATHERING

BELL PEAL
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME

PRELUDE “Trio on NETTLETON” arr. Harris

INTROIT (Hymn # 356) “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” Nettleton
CHOIR: Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing Thy Grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing, call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet, sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it, mount of God’s unchanging love!
*ALL: Here I raise my Ebenezer, hither by Thy help I’m come;
And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger, wandering from the fold of God; He, to rescue me from danger, interposed His precious blood.

*OPENING SENTENCES
LEADER: God invites us to live in the Spirit.
PEOPLE: We open our souls to God’s care.
LEADER: God calls us to have loving hearts and faith-filled lives.
PEOPLE: We open ourselves to God’s gifts.
LEADER: God summons us to be known by our faith.
PEOPLE: We open our lives to God’s claim.
LEADER: God calls us to live our faith.
PEOPLE: We open our gifts to God’s design for them.
LEADER: God offers us every gift of grace.
ALL: We will worship, give thanks and live
so that we show God’s grace all around us. Let us worship God!

*HYMN (Sing the Faith #2027) “Now Praise the Hidden God of Love” O Waly Waly

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: Our God is gracious – waiting for us to come to him;
yearning to have pity on us.
PEOPLE: Our God promises to forgive us our sins
and remove them from us as far as the east is from the west.
LEADER: Let us, then, humbly admit our sins to God.
ALL: God of compassion, you have written your law on our hearts. We are slow to read it there. Instead, we honor you with our lips. We pray long prayers. We sing hymns, but do not notice the words. “How are you?” we ask, but do not listen. “Peace be with you,” we say; but we mean, “Hello.” Our hearts are far from you. O God, forgive us. Fill us with genuine love. Help us to honor you with our hearts in worship and in faithful living. Amen.

RESPONSE (Hymn #376) “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling” Hyfrydol
CHOIR: Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down,
Fix in us Thy humble dwelling, all Thy faithful mercies crown!
Jesus, Thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love Thou art;
Visit us with Thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.
ALL: Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit into every troubled heart.
Let us all in Thee inherit, let us find the promised rest;
Take away the love of sinning, Alpha and Omega be;
End of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Hear the good news!
PEOPLE: God has called us with a holy calling, not according to our works
but according to his own purpose and grace in Christ Jesus.
LEADER: Pardon and peace are granted to all who put their trust in him.
ALL: Thanks be to God!

*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) “Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.”

THE RESPONSE

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD

*AFFIRMATION OF FAITH The Confession of 1967 (ILT)
The reconciling work of Jesus was the supreme crisis in the life of humankind. His cross and resurrection become personal cries and present hope for women and men when the gospel is proclaimed and believed. In this experience, the Spirit brings God’s forgiveness to all, moves people to respond in faith, repentance and obedience, and initiates the new life in Christ. The new life takes shape in a community in which people know that God loves and accepts them in spite of what they are. They therefore accept themselves and love others, knowing that no one has any ground on which to stand except God’s grace. Amen.

OFFERING OF OUR TITHES AND GIFTS
OFFERTORY “Land of Rest” Stearns
*DOXOLOGY (Hymnal #591)
“Praise God, from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him all creatures here below. Praise Him above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.
*PRAYER OF DEDICATION

THE SENDING

*HYMN (Sing the Faith #2241) “The Spirit Sends Us Forth to Serve” Land of Rest
*BENEDICTION

-3-

*RESPONSE (Sing the Faith #2243) “We All Are One in Mission” Kuortane
ALL: We all are one in mission; we all are one in call,
our varied gifts united by Christ, the Lord of all.
A single great commission compels us from above
to plan and work together that all may know Christ’s love.
*CHARGE
*POSTLUDE “Agincourt Hymn” Dunstable

*The congregation stands. If standing is difficult for you, please feel free to remain seated.

NEXT SUNDAY, September 6, 2009 will be the Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.
The scripture readings will be: Psalm 125 (Pew Bible pages 498-499); Proverbs 22:1-2, 8-9, 22-23 (page 527) Those who are generous to the poor are truly just. James 2:1-10, 11-13, 14-17 (page 981) Do not favor the rich over the poor, for God does not do so. Mark 7:24-37 (page 819) A woman convinces Jesus to heal her daughter. He also heals a deaf man.

PRAYER FOR PEACE MYANMAR Nuclear power is a precious source of fuel and power.  We now know that Myanmar and North Korea are partnering in some kind of arrangement to strengthen the Myanmar hand in the balance of power on earth.  With leaders who disdain common courtesies for their diplomats as well as for their people, this is a scary situation.  Do we remain passive and watch the developments, or do we step in and do something to stop them?  How do you stop intelligent minds from seeking the knowledge that will destroy us all?  God in Heaven, please put your kind hands on the people leading Myanmar and on our representatives so that the decisions made are wise; the information gathered is thorough and correctly handled; and the conclusions are soundly reached.  If it is your wish that our world stay safe from nuclear destruction, help make that happen in spite of the frightening weapons in our various arsenals.  Amen.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME and are interested in joining First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin, please indicate your desire to Pastor ByRoade so we can arrange a gathering of our Session.
WE WELCOME ALL WHO WORSHIP HERE TODAY – Coffee is available in Hager Hall following both services. Coloring pages for children to use during the worship hour are available from the ushers.
