The First Presbyterian Church of Dunedin
The Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time
World Communion Sunday
October 4, 2009
10:30 a.m.

Enter the church in silence. Through silence speak to God and let God speak to you.
PREPARATION: The following are the scripture texts for this morning: Psalm 26 (Pew Bible page 437); Job 1:1; 2:1-10 (pages 392-393) The Lord allows Satan to afflict Job to show his faithfulness. Hebrews 1:1-4; 2:5-12 (pages 970-971) God has put all things under Christ, who is superior to the angels. Mark 10:2-16 (page 822) Jesus speaks to the crowd concerning divorce.
PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Lord, you have called us to follow you, to walk your way, no matter the trials and temptations that are offered by the world. Give us the strength and forbearance we need to walk your way faithfully. And when we fall and fail, give us grace not to be overcome by our failure, strength to get up, to ask for your forgiveness, and to begin again, walking your way, by your grace. Amen.
THE GATHERING
BELL PEAL
ANNOUNCEMENTS AND WELCOME
PRELUDE St. Peter Bouman
INTROIT (Hymn #507) I Come with Joy Dove of Peace
CHOIR: I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed,
the new community of love in Christs communion bread,
in Christs communion bread.
*ALL: As Christ breaks bread and bids us share, each proud division ends.
The love that made us, makes us one, and strangers now are friends,
and strangers now are friends.
*OPENING SENTENCES
Portuguese Roberto Sanchez; Hungarian Orsi Nagy and Fanni Szemkeo; Gaelic Karol Wojciechowski; Urdu Al Schlorholtz; English Jack Hicks
LEADER: This is the day that the Lord has made;
ALL: Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
*HYMN #439 In Christ There is No East or West St. Peter
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: As we link hands with brothers and sisters throughout the world sharing the meal which makes us one, let us remember how far short we fall individually and collectively in our attempts to be obedient to God.
PEOPLE: But let us remember, too, that God surrounds us with loving kindness, promises to have mercy upon us and to forgive us.
LEADER: Trusting in that promise, let us confess our sins together.
ALL: Eternal God, cleanse our hearts of any ill will that we may hold against our neighbors. When they do not think as we do, we often judge them unenlightened. If they behave differently, we pin labels on them. We choose as our guests those we deem worthy of honor within our households. Yet through Christ you opened heaven to all without regard to their status in society. Forgive our inability to do the same, and save us from all pride and prejudice in our dealings with your children.
LEADER: And, now, Lord, hear us as we ask silently for forgiveness. (silent prayer)
In your name we pray.
ALL: Amen.
RESPONSE (Hymn #366) Jesus, Thy Boundless Love to Me St. Catherine
ALL: O grant that nothing in my soul may dwell, but Thy pure love alone;
O may Thy love possess me whole, my joy, my treasure, and my crown!
All coldness from my heart remove; may every act, word, thought be love.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
LEADER: Suffering under the weight of sin, we eagerly and gladly hear the saving word of God spoken in Christ Jesus.
PEOPLE: And now, as forgiven people, we are free to praise and proclaim Gods amazing grace in transformed living, and boldly share the message of Gods wondrous love for all people.
LEADER: Glory be to God!
PEOPLE: The Lords name be praised!
*GLORIA PATRI (Hymnal #579) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen.

We taste your kingdoms banquet feast, so finding strength to serve you here.

LEADER: Friends, this is the joyful feast of the people of God!
PEOPLE: Men and women will come from east and west,
and from north and south, and sit at table in the Kingdom of God.
PRESENTATION OF THE BREAD
LEADER: According to Luke when our risen Lord was at table with his disciples, he took bread and blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him. This is our Lords table. Our Savior invites all who love him to share the feast when he has prepared.

PEOPLE: And also with you.
LEADER: Lift up your hearts.
PEOPLE: We lift them to the Lord.

PEOPLE: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
LEADER: We give thanks, O God, for the mighty sweep of your love, embracing all people and nations. We thank you that you have sent Jesus Christ to us to break down the walls of hostility which divide the earths people, and to reveal your all-encompassing love, making us all one. Through the power of your Spirit, may this unity become a reality.
SANCTUS (Hymnal #581) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!
PRAYER OF CONSECRATION
Now by your presence, make sacred this feast in memory of Jesus Christ. As this broken bread was scattered like grain on the hillsides, and then, when gathered together, became one loaf, so may your church be gathered together from the ends of the earth into your eternal realm. Like Christ, who was offered up to you that we might live, and like this wine, which was poured out that all might share in the signs of new life, so may the lives of your people be poured out in compassion, and in solidarity with the poor, the oppressed, and the hungry of the world. For it is in the name of Jesus Christ, your Servant, that we pray. Amen.
MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION (Hymnal #582) Sanctuary Choir and Congregation
Dying, You destroyed our death; Rising You restored our life.
Lord, Jesus, come in glory!

ALL: God of all nations, you hold the whole world in your hand. So we give you our great praise that in Jesus Christ all people may see your glory. We thank you for revealing Jesus to be your Son, and for claiming our lives in baptism to be his glad disciples. By your Spirit, may peace descend upon us that we may follow him with grateful hearts. Take us and all we have to be your useful servants. Amen

NEXT SUNDAY, October 11, 2009 will be the Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The scripture readings will be: Psalm 22:1-15 (Pew Bible pages 434 - 435); Job 23:1-9, 16-17 (page 409) Job states his complaint against God. Hebrews 4:12-16 (pages 972 - 973) Since Christ is our high priest, we can confess to God in boldness. Mark 10:17-31 (pages 822 - 823) Jesus teaches a rich young man about wealth and sacrifice.
PRAYER FOR PEACE AL QAIDA On September 11, 2001, many people in the United States died by violent, planned actions of a few people from the group we now call Al Qaida. Based in Pakistan and the mountains of Afghanistan, none of our governments forces have been able to penetrate them. Since 2001, additional attacks have been committed in other countries, creating a threat that is widespread and without end. Many wonder what the motivation is: What is the question that we can answer, what is the gift that we can give to quiet this demon? How can we eliminate fear from such a threat where the enemy is invisible, skilled, and well-funded? Trading on the fear and hatred of uneducated young people, Al Qaida achieves its terror through coercion and manipulation of disaffected, poor people, and they are strengthened by determination at all costs. We remember that day eight years ago, and we wonder what can we do differently to avoid such horrors in the future. God, please help us come to understand the enemy, help us find communication links to them and ways to influence the situation. Help us to continue to protect our citizens, and at the same time, help us all be smart and watchful of those in our midst who would destroy whole civilizations on behalf of a single cause. Help us show each other kindness so that poor or misguided people among us do not become disaffected and are not available for manipulation by others. God in Heaven, we pray for your unending help and guidance to lessen the terror in our world. Amen.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
CALLED SESSION MEETING today following the 10:30 a.m. worship service in the library for the purpose of receiving new members.
WORLD PEACE SUNDAY Today, we celebrate world peace and all peacemaking efforts of the Presbyterian Church through our prayers and our missions. The Peacemaking Offering is being received today. Your contribution assists worldwide efforts on behalf of peace, and the local share goes to the Haven of RCS which helps victims of violence in Pinellas County. Please give generously to the Peacemaking Offering.
MISSION FAIR The Mission Fair in Hager Hall today is an excellent opportunity for you to get familiar with many missions that address the needs of our society. Please go into Hager Hall after this service and familiarize yourself with one or two new missions. Look especially for the World Missions exhibit. There you can find ideas about missionaries who need your help, and perhaps identify mission activities that will inspire you. The Exhibits are open until noon.
FIRST SUNDAY BOOKS DISCUSSION this evening from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. in the church library. HANDS OF MY FATHER: A Hearing Boy, His Deaf Parents and the Language of Love by Myron Uhlberg. Growing up in the deaf and hearing worlds, Uhlbergs memoir is less about the challenges of communication and more about the love that bound his family together. Honest, humorous, thoughtful autobiography about growing up in a unique household. Discussion leader: Nancy Christy. The book is available in the church library and the Pinellas County library system.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT FAMILY DINNER This week will be a pot-luck. Bring a large dish to share!
SANCTUARY CHOIR COOKIE DOUGH FUNDRAISER Help the choir raise funds to provide the orchestra for the service of Lessons and Carols on December 13. You may purchase a tub of frozen cookie dough ready to bake in many flavors, from oatmeal raisin to white chocolate macadamia nut. The 2.7 lb. tubs will yield up to 48 cookies and cost between $12 and $14. See any choir member or Stephen Allen for details and to place your order. The cookie dough will arrive by December 11, just in time for your holiday baking and gift-giving!
HARVESTFEST 2009 Introducing the SECOND ANNUAL HARVESTFEST! On Wednesday, October 28th at 6:00 PM you want to be here! This is an event unlike any other. Start by dressing up, decorate your treat bag, take a guided "trick or treat" tour but keep an eye out for surprises along the way! Finish up the night with carnival style games and you have a recipe for FUN! Don't forget to invite your family and friends. See Luke Phillips for more details. See you there!
PIPESCREAMS ORGAN CONCERT (FOR HALLOWEEN!) Join the Clearwater Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and chapter Dean, Stephen Allen, on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. in our sanctuary as they conjure up melodic trick or treats! This frightfully popular event will be followed by a reception in Hager Hall. Costumes are welcome and you are encouraged to bring a canned food donation for RCS (Religious Community Services). The program is free and open to the public (a free-will offering will be taken to benefit the scholarship fund of the AGO).
FIRST SAMARITANS A new care giving group called First Samaritans is brewing at First Presbyterian Church. Volunteers from the FPC Congregation, current BeFrienders and Congregational Care Committee members will blend their care giving talents and efforts together as First Samaritans. The First Samaritans will call on members and friends of FPC who are ill, grieving, in nursing facilities, or shut in. If you are interested in becoming a First Samaritan, please come to the Orientation for First Samaritans on Thursday, October 15 at 7 PM.
