Hebrews 4:12-16 (pages 972 - 973) Since Christ is our high priest, we can confess to God in boldness. Mark 10:17-31 (pages 822 - 823) Jesus teaches a rich young man about wealth and sacrifice.

PRAYER FOR THE DAY: Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations. Preserve the works of your mercy, that your church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your name, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION
LEADER: If anyone sins, we have someone who pleads with the Father on our behalf – Jesus Christ the righteous one.
PEOPLE: And Christ himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but also the sins of everyone.
LEADER: Let us confess ours sins before God and one another.
ALL: God of abundance, through your grace we are blessed. We try to live in obedience to your commandments, but we cling to our goods, and want even more. When called upon to give sacrificially, we go away grieving, for we have many possessions. We are afraid to give them up. Are we cast out of your kingdom? O God, forgive our selfish fears. Nothing is impossible for you! Turn our stinginess into generosity, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

We are not alone, we live in God’s world. NEXT SUNDAY, October 18, 2009 will be the Twenty-ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The scripture readings will be: Psalm 104:1-9, 24, 35 (Pew Bible page 483); Job: 38:1-7, (34-41) (page 420) The Lord answers Job’s complaints with marvelous images of the vastness of creation. Hebrews 5:1-10 (page 973) Jesus is superior to the high priests of the temple. Mark 10:35-45 (page 823) Jesus teaches that true greatness comes through serving others.

PRAYER FOR PEACE – MISSION WORK As we observed last week at the Mission Fair, there are many ways to serve God.  Some of those ways are through organized charity work or through faith-based missions.  Hunter Farrell who leads the PC (USA) World Mission has said that poverty and oppression in the developing world are deeply rooted in structures that Christians must work to change.  He says that draws us into the cultural realm, the political realm, and the social realm; but he is convinced that Christ came to be the Lord of all our lives.  So many Presbyterians are involved in mission work around the world both through direction mission initiatives and through support of mission projects.  PC (USA) World Mission is a bridge to all the work that the Church and all its global partners do, including our own efforts here at First Presbyterian Church in Dunedin, Florida.  Father in Heaven, bless us in our efforts to serve others, to carry the burden for friends and strangers alike.  Give us strength and creativity as we face the obstacles that keep us from doing all that we can, all the time.  Amen.

PIPESCREAMS – ORGAN CONCERT (FOR HALLOWEEN!) Join the Clearwater Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and chapter Dean, Stephen Allen, on Friday, October 30 at 7:00 p.m. in our sanctuary as they conjure up melodic “trick or treats”! This frightfully popular event will be followed by a reception in Hager Hall. Costumes are welcome and you are encouraged to bring a canned food donation for RCS (Religious Community Services). The program is free and open to the public (a free-will offering will be taken to benefit the scholarship fund of the AGO).
